Deep Dives - Restoring the Reef's underwater meadows
When we picture the Great Barrier Reef, we often think of colourful corals, fish and turtles. But beneath the surface, vast underwater seagrass meadows are quietly playing a critical role in keeping the Reef and our oceans healthy.
Sadly, these vital habitats are in decline, with almost one-third of the world’s seagrass already lost. As seagrass disappears, so too does a vital food source for the turtles and dugongs that depend on it.
Join us on Thursday 8 October at 10am AEST for a Deep Dives webinar hosted by Sarah Ireland, the Great Barrier Reef Foundation’s Chief of Communications and Growth, to discover the work underway to protect and restore this vital Reef habitat.
You’ll hear from our team of experts about the important role seagrass meadows play in the health of the Reef, the challenges they face and the innovative work underway to restore them. We’ll also go behind the scenes at SeaGrow in Gladstone, one of the world’s largest seagrass nurseries dedicated to restoration, where you’ll get an inside look at seagrass flowering season and see how researchers collect and grow seagrass seeds to help restore these important habitats.
This work takes on even greater importance as the Reef heads into what could be a challenging summer. With a powerful El Niño predicted, we’ll also zoom out to explore what the months ahead could mean for the Reef, how this may impact restoration efforts, and the promising research underway to help coral reefs better cope with rising ocean temperatures.
This webinar will give you a deeper understanding of the vital role seagrass plays in the Great Barrier Reef, the innovative work underway to protect and restore it, and how your support can help build a more resilient Reef. You’ll also have the chance to put your questions directly to our experts during a live Q&A.
Register now to secure your place and discover why these underwater meadows matter so much for the future of the Reef.
