Marine Safety Presentations for Schools
Marine Safety Queensland are excited to offer free, interactive marine safety education sessions tailored for school students.
These engaging presentations help young people understand the importance of responsible boating, with a key message of “what is a safe skipper and how you can be a safe skipper?”
Best of all, Teachers get a well-deserved break while we take the class for the session!
Session length options
- 60 minutes (possible, but a little rushed)
- 90 minutes (recommended for the best experience and deeper engagement)
All you need is a suitable teaching space (classroom, hall, etc.). If you wish to include a practical flare demonstration, you will also need access to a large open area such as an oval.
Delivered by experienced Marine Officers, who work within the maritime industry. Sessions include a number of hands-on activities that simulate real life marine incidents.
Key topics typically covered include:
- What makes a responsible skipper
- The Boating Fatal 5
- Master and owner responsibilities (with real-life case studies)
- Common boating mistakes (“Tinny Kooks”)
- The life-saving importance of lifejackets
- Navigation lights, collision regulations & avoiding marine incidents
- Hands-on demonstrations of safety equipment (flares, EPIRBs, lifejackets)
- Realistic marine incident scenarios
- Practical flare demonstrations*
- Drug and alcohol testing demo* (when a Water Police officer is available)
- Career pathways in the maritime industry
- Commercial mariner qualifications
*Subject to availability of resources/personnel
