This unit explores the diversity of life on the Great Barrier Reef and in associated environments.

Key Understandings

  • The habitats of the Great Barrier Reef support many groups and thousands of species of animals and plants;
  • Animals and plants have different needs;
  • The Great Barrier Reef is supported by many associated environments; and
  • The differing components of environments support different species of animal and plant.

Focus Questions

  • What lives on the Great Barrier Reef and associated environments?
  • What are the needs of the Great Barrier Reef and associated habitats?
  • How are the different environments connected to each other? and
  • What features of environments allow particular species of animals and plants to live there?

Outcomes

SOSE

In Place and Space

1.1  Students make simple connections between elements of simple ecosystems.
1.7  Students design a game to match animals, people or plants to places.

Science

In Life and Living

1.1  Students discuss their thinking about the needs of living things.
1.2  Students group living things in different ways based on observable features.
1.3  Students observe and describe components of familiar environments.
1.4   Students collect information about sources of food and shelter for animals in their local environment.
2.1   Students look for patterns and relationships between the features of different living things, and how those living things meet their needs.
2.2   Students illustrate changes which take place in the course of the life span of living things (including the growth of a plant and animal).
2.3   Students make links between different features of the environment and the specific needs of living things.

In Science and Society
