Reef Quest

At the completion of the Reef Quest Interpreting the Reef, students will have:

  • Organised a Reef HQ excursion;
  • Typed their own permission letter;
  • Presented a (Power Point) presentation on a reef creature or feature from Reef HQ; and
  • Presented a small interpretative talk to their group on excursion day.

Interpreting the Reef can be facilitated with any of the above tasks taken out.

The Reef Quest

Congratulations on empowering your students and giving them the opportunity of organising and running what is already an exciting and educational part of their school year. Handing the reins over to the children will be far more difficult than you, the Deputy Principal or Registrar organising your excursion. But it will be all worth it as you enable the children to take part in real-life decision making and organisation.

Go back to the opening page and enjoy wandering through the Reef Quest.

Bits and Pieces….

Permission Letter

Brainstorm what information needs to go onto the permission letter. Use a previous excursion letter to explore the language and structure used, then model the writing process with input from students.

Students should then type individual letters ready for distribution.

Supervision

Each group will need to be assigned a Teacher/Teacher Aide or parent during their Reef HQ excursion. The adult will be responsible for supervising the group and supporting their presentations as they make their way through the Aquarium.

Self Reflection

After the completion of each major task, students are required to fill out a self-reflection form.
