Tasks

Now that you have selected your animal as a Reef Ranger you need to complete the following tasks:

Task 1
  1. Download your Reef Ranger's Note Sheet and print it out.  You can use this sheet to take notes on your reef animal.  Remember to keep a list of the resources that you have used.
  2. Use the web links button above, other websites and books, read and take notes.
  3. Use your notes to write sentences.   Create a word document using the information you have gathered.  Remember to use the sub-headings from the Reef Ranger's Note Sheet as a guide; include your name and resources.
  4. Print your draft copy.
  5. With a partner, re-read your draft and edit your work.
  1. Look for spelling and punctuation errors.
  2. Does it make sense?
  3. Have you given away the secret?
  4. Show your teacher.
  1. Make the necessary changes to your draft on the computer.
  2. Change the font type and font size to make your work look special. When you are happy with the final copy, print your work and give it to your teacher.
Task 2

All living things go through various stages during their life.   Illustrate some of the changes that take place in your animal's life span.  Try to show your animals life cycle in your illustration.

Task 3
Deep Sea Detectives

Using the information you have gathered as a Reef Ranger, turn the rest of your classmates into Deep Sea Detectives and present the information about your animal to them.  The Deep Sea Detectives have to try and solve the mystery of what animal you are.

Hint: Do not give too much information away about your animal.  Make the Deep Sea Detectives think really hard.

Task 4

The Great Barrier Reef is under pressure. Everything we do on the reef, along the shore and even on land affects this diverse and fragile ecosystem. The plant and animal communities that make up the Great Barrier Reef need to be protected for future generations.

  1. Get into groups of three or four.   In your group decide which of your animals is in most danger from human activities.
  2. What types of human activities are endangering your animal?
  3. How do these human activities affect your animal?
  4. Brainstorm some solutions to protect your animal.   Each group member should come up with at least one solution.
  5. As a group, design a poster that shows how humans can protect your animal.
