The Reef Guardian Schools program was trialed in 25 schools in 2003 and has been steadily expanding ever since.  The majority of Reef Guardian Schools are located along the coast adjacent to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

Schools benefit from their involvement in the Reef Guardian Schools program by being recognised as leaders in sustainable living and the environmental management of the Great Barrier Reef.

Each year $20,000 in prizes are presented to schools.   This prize money supports the continual develop and implementation of Reef Guardian projects.  All schools receive a plaque in recognition of their involvement in the program.
