Plastic Bags

Action to minimise plastic bags

Action projects to minimise plastic bags

Our marine life and aquatic environments are precious. Please do your bit to ensure their survival by being more responsible with plastics.

  • Say NO to plastic bags when you go shopping
  • Take reusable bags and use them at every shop, not just at the supermarket
  • Exchange 20 plastic bags for a Reef Guardian Calico bag at the school
  • Design and make an item of clothing from plastic bags
  • Encourage the community to switch to an environmentally friendly alternative to plastic
  • Design interactive displays, promotional give-aways and a bag swap
  • Become an entirely plastic bag free school
  • Undertake beach clean ups and recycle all plastic appropriately
  • Be responsible with plastic litter disposal
  • If you have plastic waste, whether on land or water, make sure you dispose of it correctly, in bins and recycling facilities
  • Never throw plastic into the ocean, rivers or waterways where it can harm marine life
  • If you are boating or fishing, bring all your waste back with you and dispose of it thoughtfully on land. Avoid taking disposable items on board or remove all plastic packaging and wrapping and dispose of it before you set off
  • Try and use biodegradable fishing equipment and bait bags
  • Take your waste items home from the beach with you
  • Remember, plastic dumped on land can be blown long distances or carried along waterways where it eventually ends up in the ocean
  • Work with others in your community to educate the community on marine debris and how they can help avoid it
  • Discover more about the dangers of Marine Debris in the Hot Topics section.
  • Contact your local National Parks and Wildlife Service if you discover an injured or dead marine animal.  In Queensland, phone the EPA Hotline 1300 130 372.
  • Join with others in your community to monitor marine debris and contribute to national and international monitoring efforts. Further information can be found at http://www.ephc.gov.au/pdf/EPHC/marine_debris.pdf
  • Complete the attached Marine Debris Survey. Return surveys to: PO Box 1268 NT 0801 or fax them to (08) 0841 6494
