How to become a Reef Guardian School
To participate in the Reef Guardian Schools Program the following are:
Essential
- Register with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority
- Arrange an initial staff briefing on all aspects of being a Reef Guardian School
- Develop a plan of action to highlight the school or a class involvement in the program
- Participate in reef education activities as a class or school across a variety of key learning areas
- Participate in Sea Week and World Environment Day activities each year
- Encourage students to educate their families about Reef-Care principles
- Ensure that the program is ongoing
- Submit a copy of the school's Reef Guardian Commitment and documentation verifying the schools activities to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority by the end of Term 3.
Desirable
- Use the Reef ED Teaching Units and the Reef HQ Education Programs available at www.reefED.edu.au
- Encourage students to play a key role as a Reef Guardian (this will vary from school to school)
- Display the Reef Guardian Schools logo throughout the school
- Demonstrate to the community and to other schools the importance of best environmental practices and principles for the Reef
- Promote the school as a model Reef Guardian through the School Development Plan, either as a focal point or through aspects of the curriculum
- Liaise with other schools on what they are doing to become a Reef Guardian School
- Appoint a Reef Guardian School contact person, and advise the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority that they have been appointed - and of any future changes.
