Pelican1 was built by a group of people with the aim of creating inspirational projects at sea. Pelican Expeditions now works with marine research bodies, Indigenous communities, corporates and government to bring our projects to life. Our programs provide an integrative approach to marine science, community involvement, Education and Industry Training.

Pelican1 was launched in 2004 by her Patron, Andrew Denton, after five years of boat building in Melbourne Docklands. The people behind the boat dreamt of creating inspirational projects at sea.

Pelican1 had an exiting and challenging first two years of operation. In her first year, Pelican1 took part in Blue and Sperm Whale research off Portland in Victoria, then the boat circumnavigating Australia.

Pelican 1 and her crew have also developed strong links with the Hope Vale community in Cape York and completed a major project there in September 2005.

Pelican 1 has also worked on an ABC documentary about Blue Whales, which will be on television soon.

Come aboard Pelican1 as she embarks on a project with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.

Pelican1 is sailing from Bundaberg on March 6, 2006 on a five week Monitoring and Management survey of the Great Barrier Reef.

You won't be able to fit on board as the boat will be full of scientists, Indigenous trainees, crew and a few floating visitors. But you will be able to take part through our Live at Sea Classroom and link to our Pelican Brain.

Have you ever thought about what life as a marine scientist might be like?

You will be able to ask questions directly to the Indigenous trainees, the scientists or the crew to find out about life at sea. You will also be able to learn about the amazing Barrier Reef and to understand the dangers that face this beautiful place, that we in Australia must look after.

All of the Great Barrier Reef is "Sea Country" to different Indigenous people along the Great Barrier Reef Coastline. Pelican 1 will be travelling through this different "Sea Country" and you can learn about some of the Indigenous knowledge intrinsic to the region.  Click and find out more about Traditional Owners.

Follow the Pelican1 journey and ask the crew questions about what they have learned or discovered by visiting the Pelican Expeditions website below.
