The land birds of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park are principally confined to the continental islands, and the composition of the avian communities on the islands mirrors those found in similar habitats on the adjacent mainland.

However, the Park is particularly important to a number of species, including the pied imperial pigeon, and a silver-eye endemic to the Capricorn-Bunker island group.

Birds play an important role in the health of ecosystems on the islands and cays of the Reef where they are responsible for the dispersal of some plant species.
